Charn was empty when Polly and Digory saw it. But earlier people had admired it and thought it the wonder of the world.
In those days, Charn had been filled with the sights and sounds of slaves groaning, of people being sacrificed at temples, and – eventually – of battle to the death between two warring sisters.
