Chapter one, The Magician’s Nephew

Digory was just starting to tell Polly he thought they should leave when his Uncle Andrew rose from a high-backed chair and locked the door so no one could get in to rescue them. Then Uncle Andrew blocked their only other route of escape.

When Digory heard that Polly’s dad had suggested that the problem with an empty house might be its drains, Digory dismissed the idea because adults come up with “uninteresting explanations.”

Digory had lots of reasons to cry. His dad was in India, his mom was dying, he had just been uprooted to his aunt’s house and there was something wrong with his uncle who (Digory worried) might come creeping along the passage past Digory’s room late at night.
